Reusable, recycling, compostable

Our industry is a signatory to the Ellen MacArthur Foundation’s New Plastics Economy Global Commitment which aligns with our own industry voluntary initiative on plastic packaging. It encompasses a common vision of a circular economy across business sectors that is focused on innovation in the design of plastics, elimination of unnecessary plastics and ensuring that plastics are kept in the economy and out of the environment.

Ellen McArther Foundation’s New Plastics Economy Global Commitment

Committed to a circular economy for plastics

A.I.S.E.’s voluntary initiative on plastic packaging set ambitious targets for the industry aimed at increasing the uptake of recycled content in plastic packaging when it was introduced in 2019, committing the industry to a minimum of 20% volume of recycled plastic material in the packaging of all household products, in addition to ensuring that all plastic packaging for household products can be recyclable, reusable or compostable.

We monitor progress over time and exchange best practices and collaboration in our value chain as well as providing guidance to the industry at large. Participation is open to all companies placing cleaning and detergent products on the market, regardless of whether they are members of A.I.S.E. Details about joining the commitment are outlined below.

By 2022, this goal of 20% of recycled plastic material in household packaging was already met. In the same year, almost 82% of plastic packaging material is already recyclable, reusable or compostable.  To continue in this direction, it is essential that markets are matures enough to ensure sufficient quality and quantity of recycled material for all suppliers.

The A.I.S.E. high level principles support companies manufacturing and/or placing detergents, cleaners and maintenance products on the market and build on the learnings on packaging from the A.I.S.E. Charter for Sustainable Cleaning with its goal of delivering a circular economy and contributing to the global Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The A.I.S.E. guiding principles on packaging design contribute directly to SDG 9 (Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure), SDG 12 (Responsible Consumption and Production), SDG 13 (Climate Action), SDG 14 (Life below Water) and SDG 15 (Life on Land).
