Candle Emissions

Candles, both perfumed and non-perfumed, fall within the scope of air fresheners in A.I.S.E.’s portofolio and are therefore part of A.I.S.E.’s Product Stewardship Programme for Indoor Air Emissions from Air Fresheners.

In additional the candle manufacturers are committed to developing a methodology and establishing a Europe-wide standard for emissions from candles to increase the level of safety for consumers.

European standards for candle emissions

As part of this commitment, the European Candle Manufacturers Association with the support of A.I.S.E. initiated the development of the first CEN safety standards for indoor candles in the early 2000s already. Standards for scented candles were published in 2015 and standards for outdoor candles followed in 2021. The last piece to complete this ambitious initiative to increase consumer protection is a standard for candle accessories which was published by the European Committee for Standardization (CEN) in August 2023.

A further step involves a study with the University of Milan to analyse the emissions of candles. This work is in progress and a collaboration including A.I.S.E., the European Candle Manufacturers Association (ECMA) and the International Fragrance Association (IFRA).
