Ethanol and the Biocidal Products Regulation: Where Do We Stand?

16-10-2025

Today, A.I.S.E. hosted the webinar: “Ethanol and the Biocidal Products Regulation: Where Do We Stand?”.

The Opinion of the ECHA Biocidal Products Committee, which will inform the classification of ethanol under the EU’s Biocidal Products Regulation, is now less than six weeks away.

We are therefore at a critical moment to preserve the availability of ethanol-based biocidal products in the European Union.

Key takeaways:

  • Ethanol in biocidal products, such as hand sanitisers, surface disinfectants, and antiseptics, is safe, effective, and irreplaceable.
  • Ethanol-based biocidal products are essential for many sectors: from human health and in healthcare settings, to food production, hospitality, leisure, veterinary care, transportation, and beyond.
  • A reclassification of ethanol in biocidal products in the EU would result in a de facto public ban and severely restrict their availability in professional settings. This would have serious consequences for public health, economic stability, and trust in competent authorities.
  • The oral consumption of alcohol should not determine the classification of ethanol in biocidal products.
  • Ethanol should be re-approved without re-classification by the European Commission.

We encourage you to:

  • Spread the word! Reach out to competent national authorities, allies, and media as a matter of urgency.
  • Sign the joint statement on the future of ethanol-based biocidal products in the EU (will be circulated to participants separately).
  • Join our online campaign by engaging with the A.I.S.E LinkedIn account and website aise.eu/handsupforethanol/.
