A.I.S.E. raises concerns about reclassification of ethanol under BPR

12-11-2024

A.I.S.E. has raised concerns with the European Commission regarding the potential reclassification of ethanol as Carcinogen and Reproductive Toxicant, Category 1 or Category 2, under the Biocidal Products Regulation (BPR).

Ethanol is a crucial ingredient in many essential products, including detergents and biocides (such as disinfectants). It plays a vital role in preventing healthcare-associated infections, especially in hospitals, and was key in the fight against SARS-CoV-2. Reclassifying ethanol could jeopardise the availability of these products, creating significant health and safety risks for European citizens and healthcare workers.

Additionally, this reclassification would have serious economic consequences for Europe’s competitiveness, with no suitable alternatives available.

A.I.S.E. urges the European Commission to treat this matter as a priority and take urgent action to ensure the continued availability of these essential products for public health and industry.
