The safe and sustainable use of cleaning and maintenance products is of paramount importance to A.I.S.E. Over the last 30 years, the industry has made continual commitments on product safety that go beyond legislation and have launched a range of voluntary initiatives to engage with consumers and professional users on safe and sustainable habits, use and disposal of products and packaging. Engaging users, especially consumers, to change their habits is essential given that the greatest environmental impact of most of our products is when they are used.

How the industry communicates safety advice to end users

However, it is difficult to distinguish the most important safety messages on a product label. This is because labels are crowded with legally required information, much of which is important but difficult for the user to comprehend. A.I.S.E. is committed to making labels easier to read, helping the user to notice the safety information, understand it, and engaging with them to act upon it.

This is done in a very visual way, by promoting the use of icons instead of text, simplifying the pictograms, and exploring routes for enhancing digital communication. This material developed by A.I.S.E. is made available to all companies placing products on the market, without the requirement of being a member of the A.I.S.E. network. The artwork can be downloaded on this website and is accompanied with specific legal and technical guidelines on how it can be used and placed on product packaging and labels. The artwork covers the following areas:

  • Safety information: A.I.S.E.’s safe use icons have been in wide use across a range of household products since 2005
Safe Use Icons
  • Sustainable information: A.I.S.E.’s sustainable use panels were introduced in 1997 and cover six household product categories. Since 2021, a call to action to remove and recycle plastic sleeves is in use for laundry and other household products, to increase the uptake of recycled packaging material.

  • Professional applications: Since 1993, professional cleaners have benefitted from A.I.S.E.’s pictograms to clearly indicate where a particular product is intended to be used, as well as guidance on the sustainable use of disinfectants.
